White’s students had the opportunity to learn new skills during the 2010 school year, including painting, Internet computing, and others—skills which will help them when they enter the workforce. These classes are available to White’s students thanks to a new partnership with Ivy Tech.
Students take all of their classes at White’s Jr./Sr. High School, but sometimes travel off-site to sit for certification exams. They also receive certificates from Ivy Tech, a nice bonus for the student and a great resume builder. According to Alaina Chamberlain, Life Skills/Aftercare Coordinator, “Watching our youth finish a course is very rewarding. Many of them have worked extremely hard and are excited about their accomplishments.”
Future courses are planned in the areas of Administrative Assistant, Plumbing, and Weatherization. The partnership will help open new possibilities to our students, and gives them a chance to practice skills that you don’t find in a normal high school classroom.
What other types of skills do you think would be good for us to offer to our youth? We welcome your input!
